Match the denominator to the tool
Choose 16 for a ruler marked in sixteenths, 32 for finer workshop rules, or 64 only when the tool and material can support that precision. Selecting a finer denominator does not make a flexible material or rough cut more accurate.
Work through one example
For 1.337 inches on a 1/32-inch ruler, multiply 1.337 by 32 to get 42.784. Round to 43, then divide by 32: 43/32, or 1 11/32 inches. Compare that practical mark with the exact value before cutting.
Use the rounding difference
A positive difference means the selected ruler mark is larger than the exact dimension; a negative difference means it is smaller. The difference helps decide whether to sand, allow a glue gap, or switch to metric measurement.
Avoid cumulative rounding
Do not round each intermediate conversion. Convert the original dimension to the exact target size first, then create one practical fraction. Repeated rounding across a row of parts can create a visible total-length error.
